At first, I thought I wasn't going to enjoy Mysteryland primarily because I'm not really into electronic dance music. But as soon as I stepped into Bethelwoods Center for Performing Arts, it was so unbelievably magical. If I could describe it, it was like a modern day 1960s love fest. It was like a circus show of freaks, fairies, and gypsies. It was seriously the biggest and best dance party you could ever possibly go to and I was lucky enough to go to it.

Now, I like rock concerts and if I wasn't photographing the event where my ticket and expenses were comped, I would totally pay for tickets to go to Mysteryland because it was that amazing. From the vendors of merchandise and goods, stands of food and beverages, and the multitude of stages, there was music pouring out of every orifice of the venue.

It even smelled amazing there as if incense and oils were coming from each and every speaker and piece of equipment of the place. I honestly expected it to smell of body odor and unwashed bodies but nope, berries and flowers instead! Everyone was dressed so creatively as well. I saw Indians, gypsies, ballerinas, hippies, penis costumes, cats, trolls, fairies, and outrageously colorful and scantily clad attire adorned on a lot of bodies. No matter how differently everyone dressed, there was one common feature that stuck out to me that everyone seemed to have possessed and that was positivity.

Unlike a rock concert, there were no fights, no violence, no mosh pits. Every person was smiling and laughing and having a good time. I feel like an EDM festival can be the antidote for depression. A festival like Mysteryland can definitely lift your spirits. There was love and compassion throughout everywhere. One guy from the crowd at the main stage saw how cold I was while waiting to shoot the headliner for Saturday night, Porter Robinson, and gave me his jacket to keep me warm.

One DJ I definitely wanted to catch was TJR on Sunday at the boat stage. There seemed to be more people at his stage than the main one when he played. It looked as if waves of people surrounded the boat which made for a fantastic sight.

Empire of the Sun played Saturday night, and they put on such a grandiose performance with dancers, props, costumes, and amazing effects and lighting. It felt like I was witnessing something from another planet, and it really pleased me to see a band on the stage with instrumentals since that's what I'm used to seeing anyway -- but totally not expecting from an EDM artist.

Dillon Francis rocked the main stage on Sunday night opening for Diplo. As the last act, Diplo ended the night by calling up four girls from the crowd that could twerk and well, there were quite a lot more than just four girls that could twerk that made it on the stage! There were fireworks after his performance and then the main stage had a spectacle of lights and fire!

The whole message and intention of Mysteryland is to spread love and positive vibes which is something we could use more of in the world.  I felt the energy and the good vibes and because of that festival, I can now say I'm a fan of electronic dance music!
