A review of the Thurston Moore album The Best Day.

Sonic Youth have been one of the most influential alternative rock bands of the last few decades, and even after the breakup of the group, Thurston Moore is still making waves. In fact, it is quite hard to keep up with the many side projects, collaborations and solo initiatives he has been involved since the hiatus of his former band.

However, The Best Day is perhaps the closest that Moore came to embrace the sound of his former band in years. The formula is virtually the same, but the context is very different.

Sonic Youth’s mesmerizing melodies, noisy sonic fabric and dissonant weirdness are still there, but the atmosphere is peculiar: The Best Day feels like a more intimate and personal work, almost as if Moore was dwelling on his musical and personal past with a hint of melancholia. There is an odd tension pervading the entire recording, making for a truly immersive listening experience.

This is not Moore’s attempting to “sound like his former act”, but it feels like a spontaneous stream of consciousness: most of the singing borders with the spoken word format, and the song structures flirt with more drone-out and free form arrangements.

This feels like Thurston Moore’s most personal, fragile and inspired work in years.
