A review of the Frightened Rabbit album Painting of a Panic Attack.

Frightened Rabbit has just dropped their fifth full-length album, Painting of a Panic Attack. Produced by the National’s Aaron Dessner, the new LP has been dashed with a bit of the National’s slick and richly gloomy sound. Lyrically the record is gloomy, pessimistic—and probably hungover.

The record begins with some of the strongest new tracks. “Death Dream” puts down lush piano and lyrics that evoke, like the song title might suggest: death. It moves at a slow hypnotic pace and it’s refreshing to hear a band sing with an obviously Scottish accent. “Get Out” lets out a potent chorus and shows that that Frightened Rabbit are now using the guitar more to create atmosphere rather than to have it stand out as a unique instrument.

Again, like the title might suggest “I Wish I Was Sober” talks of slurring speech, wrapping hands around glasses and all the while wishing it wasn’t that way. Appropriately, the following song is “Woke Up Hurting”. This song is energetic, lively and certainly recovering from a heavy night.

“Little Drum” doesn’t shy away from being serious. Over a backdrop of deep piano and full bass the lyrics conjure up images of boredom, aging and death. On the other hand “Still Want To Be Here” is desperately romantic.

Although “An Otherwise Disappointing Life” carries bleak lyrical content, it’s one of the most musically upbeat tracks on the record. “A Lick Of Paint” ends the record with the touch of a folk vibe with lush acoustic guitar and full backing vocals.

Painting Of A Panic Attack has vast and beautiful production. Although more subdued than previous records, there are a handful of deeply moving tracks that starkly present the darker moments in life.
