A review of the Beak> album Couple in a Hole.

Forget London: Bristol is one of the most exciting cities in the United Kingdom when it comes to alternative music. The buzzing birthplace of trip-hop Is home to influential artists like Massive Attack and Portishead. The latter is the brainchild of eclectic producer and performer Geoff Barrow, who expands his creative reach through his Beak> side project.

If you're expecting something anything in the vein of his well-known day job, you'd be wrong. The music in the soundtrack of upcoming Scottish film Couple in a Hole showcases a dense yet sparse sonic tapestry, where distant beats make a sloppy rhythm section over lush and dreamy guitar landscapes that echo early post-rock music.

If you really want to find a song that ties in this work with the music of Portishead, “The Cornubia” comes close with a more definite song structure and with Barrow’s reverb-soaked lyricism.

On songs such as “Nailsea,” Barrow makes it a point to highlight how simplicity and stillness can be powerful tools within the arsenal of a producer. His songs evolve slowly yet steadily, through the simplicity of a guitar-oriented sound. Whale-like ebow effects blend with mechanical delay repeats and a bare rhythm section, creating an eerie and suffuse atmosphere that's very much in tune with the aesthetics of the film.
