A review of the Raveonettes song “Junko Ozawa.”

Danish duo The Raveonettes are in the process of creating and slowly unveiling an anti-album. Each month the band is dropping a freshly recorded track, and no one—not even the band—will know exactly what the end result will sound like until December. On the band’s website they tease that they’re taking you on a ride: “potentially schizophrenic & disjointed, potently cohesive and related.” The newest and fourth release for this album in progress is the biting and forceful “Junko Ozawa.”

The song’s title pays homage to the Japanese composer and sound designer known for composing many of the soundtracks for the Famicom and 80s and early 90s Nintendo games. The song unites 8-bit chiptunes with fuzzed out guitars riding a driving, almost desperate beat. The lyrics talk of pushing through the pain of loss, cheating and heartbreak.

The Ravonettes anti-album release plan is refreshing, creative and by the sound of “Junko Ozawa”—it’s pushing them to produce great work.
