A review of the Britta Phillips album Luck or Magic.

Britta Phillips is no newbie to the indie pop scene. During the span of her thirty year music career, she has played in numerous bands -- most notably she was a member of 1990s band Luna and one half of the duo, Dean & Britta, with husband and Luna bandmate Dean Wareham -- in addition to scoring films and singing voiceover for the 1980s animated TV series, Jem. Finally, Phillips offers us her first solo attempt with Luck or Magic, a dreamy batch of songs that marries elements of her past musical projects with expressive melodies that are unrelentlessly feminine and that just seem uniquely her. Fans of Lana del Rey and Anya Marina should listen up!

Luck or Magic opens with “Daydream”, a track that showcases Phillips’ thin yet evocative voice. She holds out words like “waiting” and “staying,” her vocals somehow haunting against a dainty guitar part and soothing drums. “Daydream” successfully introduces the hazy and felt atmosphere of Luck or Magic.

“Do it Last” follows, with Phillips assuring the subject of her song that while he “can pin [her] up on [his] wall,” he had also better come whenever she calls for him. The injection of the speaker’s feeling of, at the least, attachment and, at the most, passionate ownership, over her subject will resonate with listeners everywhere. Haven’t we all felt frustrated at the idea of our significant other having a past, of being with other people? However, the ethereal feeling of the song will help us all keep our cool.

Luck or Magic has moments where it continues the foggy, elegant momentum -- “Drive” and “Fallin’ in Love” exemplify this -- however, to keep our interest, Phillips has also included more upbeat numbers with seemingly great “single” potential like “Wrap Your Arms Around Me” and “Million Dollar Doll.” Both of the latter songs are reminiscent of “running-into-each-other’s-arms’” scenes in ‘80s movies -- and what better criteria should exist for great music?

TL;DR? If you’re a fan of pop or the feeling of running into your lover’s arms, Luck or Magic just might do it for you.
