A review of the Radiohead song “Daydreaming.”

Throughout their long, experimental, and influential career, Radiohead has been and is still able to keep us guessing with each new project. Each album toys with new sounds, sometimes taking on relevant, broad world issues, yet always offering music that comes off affected, personal, and deeply felt. Their new, stripped-down single “Daydreaming” might be the calming path to denouement from the previously-released, comparably more striking and frantic “Burn the Witch.”

And perhaps there is no better time for Thom Yorke and Co. to give us this much-needed breather. “Daydreaming” is genius in its simplicity. Thom Yorke’s achingly profound and wheezy voice is accompanied by a recurring piano part, fragile yet powerful as it works against haunting background vocals, occasional strings, and slight synth. The music video, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, features Thom Yorke walking through various places (different rooms of a home, an abandoned warehouse, a parking deck, a beach) and culminates in him reaching a cave and crawling to hunch by the fire.

There is so much beauty that lies in what is not said and shown in “Daydreaming,” and its minimal and subtly emotional atmosphere is a refreshing veer away from the white noise of the everyday.

The music video has already been screened on 35mm in select theaters around the country. Radiohead’s new album, A Moon Shaped Pool, was released on May 8th, 2016.
