REVIEW: We Are Scientists - Helter Seltzer

The album begins with a bang; the first single from Helter Seltzer, "Buckle" is arguably the best song of the ten new tracks from We Are Scientists. The pounding drums and dingy bass line give this hard-hitting number some power and depth as duo Keith Murray and Chris Cain harmonize, "Why not make this interesting? I want you to buckle when you think of me."

We Are Scientists have gone through nine members since 1999, with only Murray and Cain remaining through it all. The duo have a real wit and chemistry that is easy to see in their famously candid interviews, and easy to hear in their melodically charged vocals.

It's hard to put a finger on what or where the sound comes from, and upon further research I discovered that the Helter Seltzer sound was inspired by a number of different bands, all 80's/90's vinyl in the band's collection.  Not a surprising revelation, since We Are Scientists can sound like a really clean alternative rock band and then take a sharp turn into Billy Idol territory with ease.

Diversifying the sound further, Helter Seltzer features keyboardist Max Hart who joined We Are Scientists on their 2008 album, Brain Thrust Mastery, and had since toured with Katy Perry. It's refreshing to hear the benefits of pop music concentrated down into a spunkiness that gives Helter Seltzer a real charm.
