A review of the Supermoon album Playland.

Making their debut on Vancouver indie label Mint Records, Supermoon brings us a solid new LP of self-aware indie pop tracks. Playland successfully marries elements of upbeat, jangly pop with straightforward garage rock, and each track features intelligent lyrics via the lead singer’s sweet vocals that ground the music throughout all the fun. Having just come back from NYC Popfest last weekend, Playland is the perfect segway to more nostalgic-sounding twee pop — and its sunlit lead guitar riffs and overall energetic atmosphere certainly welcome the summer!

Playland opens with the track “Night Division,” a perfect introduction to Supermoon’s sound. The darker bass parts contrast perfectly with the brighter lead guitar riffs, which ring out in that familiar, distorted way. Charmingly slight vocals and relentless drumming continue the interesting modern contrast, while also nodding to the Sarah Records-esque indie pop of the ‘90s.

Following tracks “Witching Hour” and “If You Say So” successfully build up momentum for the particularly catchy “Bottleships,” which has also been released as the band’s first single in April. The lead guitar provides an optimistic twang against a youthful melody, and the fuzzy atmosphere reinforces the dreamlike quality of the song. The guitar distortion builds up toward the end of the song, perhaps alluding to the motion of a ship taking off.

“Stories We Tell Ourselves About Ourselves,” perhaps a not-so-shy nod to California- and New York-based author Joan Didion’s most-quoted line, sounds appropriately beachy. The repetitive vocals and fun yet shadowy guitar parts ring out together in a summery haze. The album continues to offer driving pop in the same vein, but each song brings something slightly different to the table.

Playland was released on May 20th, 2016. The album can be downloaded digitally and is also available as a 2x7 record for you collectors out there!
