A review of the Megafauna album Welcome Home.

Megafauna is a rock trio from Austin, Texas, known for their experimental sound and progressive evolution from album to album. Founded in 2008 by singer/guitarist Dani Neff (named Austin's Best Electric Guitarist by the Austin Chronicle), their latest album, their fourth, is called Welcome Home and it's a perfect culmination of two very distinct styles the band excels at.

Welcome Home begins with Dani Neff breathing heavy lyrics till the song gives way and drops into a heavy and provoking rock and roll sludge. She flies her vocals over the dinginess like a kite on a breeze, eventually succumbing to an amazing guitar solo while the drums beat a repetition and the bass leans in a pulls back over and over. This is one hell of an intro to the album and it's exactly the kind of music I dig most. However, Welcome Home is not a balls to the wall album in its entirety, most of the latter half of the album is quite slow, dreamy, psychedelic, and makes a point to showcase both sides of the band's personality. Half heavy rock and roll, half Neo-psychedelia.

The general consensus online is that Welcome Home is the best Megafauna album yet, and that they've taken their dual personality and instead of making this album one or the other, have melded the two genres together to create something completely new and original. This album kept me guessing the entire way though, and I love that. It forces you to pay attention to every detail because you dare not miss a beat, or in this case, cascading wind chimes or a synthesizer harmony, or what could easily be a tribute to any 70's hard rock band.
