A review of the Titus Andronicus song “Sun Salutation.”

How about mixing a little opera in with your punk? That’s what Titus Andronicus did last year when they dropped The Most Lamentable Tragedy—a super ambitious, 29-track epic with manic highs and despondent lows.

The record release party at NYC’s Shea Stadium that followed reached equally lofty proportions: 5 consecutive sold-out nights. These nights have now been cut to vinyl and readied to be put out all over the interweb as the live album, S+@DIUM ROCK Five Nights at the Opera.

The record isn’t out until July 29th for digital and August 5th for physical, but “Sun Salutation” and “No Future Part V” have been teased on YouTube. If you’re expecting these songs to sound anything like the record, think again.

As a studio recording, “Sun Salutation” is 59 seconds of beautiful a cappella, perhaps channeling Queen’s vocal harmonies. The live version, however, smashes heavy drums and dueling guitars. The vocals are a raw chant, paying little concern to pitch. “No Future V” was originally arranged as a ballad for piano and voice; however, the live version hits with a gritty, full band arrangement.

S+@DIUM ROCK: Five Nights at the Opera will no doubt be an interesting listen because the arrangements and performances will be so different from what we’ve heard Titus Andronicus do in the studio. And perhaps that poses the question: Why listen to a live record if it isn’t going to be different or better than what a band can do with all the digital recording magic?
