A review of the Phantogram song “You Don't Get Me High Anymore.”

Phantogram has released their new single, “You Don’t Get Me High Anymore”, along with news of forthcoming album Three and a tour. Complete with driving guitar, dance-y percussion, and straightforward lyrics, the song packs the emotive, electronica punch for which the duo is known. The vocals are clear and seemingly not distorted, and the song’s message is clear. Everything works together to deliver a pop-filled declaration of self-awareness.

“You Don’t Get Me High” also further demonstrates how far the band has come since their first full-length LP, which drew upon more unusual trip-hop, indie electronic pop elements. Some of their more well-known earlier releases (2013’s “Fall in Love” for example, which has over 20 million hits on Spotify, sounds decidedly more “indie pop” with its distorted vocals and comparably low-key production) sound more experimental in comparison, revealing the band’s clear decision to move toward a more mainstream pop sound.

The single boasts a new attitude from Phantogram, but honestly, it makes sense that the band is now heading in this new direction. Working together with big names like Flaming Lips, Big Boi, and A-Trak over the past couple years, the duo has only been gaining more exposure and using those collaborative experiences as avenues to further develop and hone in on their sound. I’m interested in seeing where it takes them.
