As a Canadian kid I'm especially sad to learn that Hot Hot Heat has an expiration date. This band has a CanCon staple since 1999 and I can't imagine a world without them. Their new album, self titled, will be the last album ever from Hot Hot Heat - a final hurrah after a very long career and many many years spent touring. I personally have never heard of a band ducking out on their own accord, unless it was for retirement purposes, but Hot Hot Heat has decided to take destiny by the horns and end on their terms. Instead of fading into obscurity or completely rewiring the very heart of their sound, this album is their farewell.

This album was actually written between 2011 and 2014, using their own first two albums as inspiration. I find that interesting especially in this case because it really hits home how personal and perfected this last effort is. If you're going to go out, you may as well go out with a bang, and this Hot Hot Heat album is truly that. Most new albums come to fruition with the intention of boosting the fan base, the career, the evolution of the band, but a last album has nothing to prove other than upholding a legacy. Hot Hot Heat is in this unique position has chosen to simply highlight everything that makes them who they are: catchy hooks, dance-rock rhythms, and a hint of whimsy.

Frontman Steve Bays shared this statement:

“To be able to tour from 1999 to 2014 and play hundreds of shows a year was amazing. It changed all of our lives. It was the greatest experience I could ever imagine. I can relate to our fans and I respect our fans. They are the kind of people I'd hang out with. I'm proud of every single record, and of finding the ground between making it challenging and fresh, but also not being afraid to be entertaining and put on a crazy show. Every show we ever did was just a total high energy spectacle and that's a great legacy to have.”

Hot Hot Heat has a fantastic album and should definitely be proud to end on a high note. Here's hoping the members show up again on the music scene and find even bigger and better things in the future.
