A review of the DJ Shadow song “The Mountain Will Fall.”

With the dark, eerie atmospheres, trip-hop beats and the fact that he’s worked with acts like Massive Attack and UNKLE, Shadow always seemed the appropriate name for this DJ. DJ Shadow got his start in Davis, California, a college town 10 minutes from where I grew up. Being relatively small and not having many local heroes, I always felt a special affinity with his music. Throwing on Entroducing….. back in the day was a key move to quickly win you approval at any party.

Last month DJ Shadow dropped The Mountain Will Fall, his first record in five years. Although Shadow didn’t want this record to be filled with a roster of famous guest appearances, it still features appearances from Run the Jewels, Nils Frahm and several others. In 2001 DJ Shadow got put in the Guinness Book of World for being the first completely sampled album; however, he has definitely branched out from his early style.

The title track is a slow instrumental ride, colored by bright analog synth chords, bouncing arpeggios, and record whir breakdowns. It features a sample of 70s Italian singer-songwriter Dario Baldan Bembo’s work, “Prima Alba.”

Shadow has traveled a long distance from where he began—like any good artist should. “The Mountain Will Fall” is a solid introduction to a hype record.
