Due to the controversy over their name, Viet Cong, who released a killer euphonious album last year, has reemerged with the new moniker Preoccupations. Now they’re gearing up to release a new album in September and have teased the single “Anxiety” in preparation.

“Anxiety” is a mix of of hot and cold. It carries the searing, crisp production of bands like Interpol, but at the same time has icy, metallic synthesizers and drums that sound like they took notes from the Factory Records playbook. The song begins with drifting space, before the deep, wobbly synths and vocals descend. Cathy guitar and synth hooks add color and brightness to the dark clouds cast by the vocals and rhythm section. Lyrically, depending on your perspective, the song could be an ode to anxiety or a description of the terror that it sometimes causes.

Preoccupations is one of the best bands to carry the post-punk torch. No doubt that this album will be one of the darkest and best of 2016.
