Sigur Rós eases back into our ears with a stripped-down new single that recalls the more moody, deceptively simple sounds of their past albums. Meaning “storm” in Icelandic, “Óveður” affects the feel of a quiet yet commanding disturbance in the atmosphere. There exists an openness between everything happening that allows the song a peculiar dimension. The electronic instrumentation along with the chilling, hypnotic vocals typical of Sigur Rós make the song coasting, yet meaningful; it is at first relaxed, then expansive. “Óveður” evokes the life-cycle of a storm.

Lead vocalist Jónsi Birgisson drags out mild notes of longing against a minimalistic backdrop, which only slowly grows louder and more unexpected as the track carries on. All sounds complement each other in that strange, satisfying way the Icelandic Sigur Rós has only grown to further master throughout their impressive international career. The percussion, daunting and experimental yet somehow still remarkably subtle, is reminiscent of the quirky darkness of Sufjan Stevens’ Age of Adz. The slight guitar droning against Birgisson’s vocals hits the sweet spot between chill and dramatic. You’ll get the curious sense that there is more happening in the song than what we can hear.

And perhaps this debut will usher in some more new Sigur Rós music? While there is not yet any official news on a new Óveður, the Sigur Rós is playing a slew of awesome festivals this summer including Citadel Festival in London, Lowlands Festival in The Netherlands, and Norway’s Pstereo Festival.
