California Indie band Local Natives are hyping their next album with a slow trickle of classic summer anthems, and the latest temptation is “Fountain Of Youth.” The third of singles released before the album Sunlit Youth drops this September, “Fountain Of Youth” highlights the new direction the band is moving toward.

After pilgrimages to the likes of Nicaragua and Thailand, Local Natives were exposed to a vast variety of new music and found themselves looking introspectively at themselves and their own music. While their Indie-rock sound has not necessarily been replaced, the lyrics and the intention has changed. Whatever Local Natives has become, and whatever we're going to experience with Sunlit Youth, we know for certain that this band is approaching their next steps with a renewed vigor and passion.

"I think we better listen to these kids," drives the songwriting approach of Local Natives' “Fountain Of Youth,” a feel good anthem aimed unabashedly at its clear target. "We can do whatever we want" is the chant repeated in the song's chorus. Appealing to the idea purported by "these kids" the band is listening to, the song's message skims the conflicting surfaces of being both follower and individual: a contrast inherent to growing up.

"We can say whatever we mean," is a clever second line to the chorus, as "we can say whatever we want" would have been trite and childish, while speaking to meaning versus entitlement points to mature development. Musically, the beat is driving, the bass full and dynamic, the approach anthemic.

The style is squarely set in Indie Folk, the track itself catchy and positive: the recipe for a good summer hit. In short, the sound is warmly familiar, the style worn but short of fraying.
