Ever wanted to throw everything away and start again? Mass Gothic is singer-songwriter Noel Heroux’s attempt at complete renewal. After spending a decade behind Hooray for Earth, he has started again from scratch. The result is a collection of expansive, noisy guitar-driven tracks that were jotted down onto a 4-track recorder. Sub Pop Records is now putting out this new LP and “Nice Night” is one of its strongest tracks.

If there were a way to combine the weight of an anvil with the indefinable essence of a cloud, “Nice Night” would capture that. The bass is an onerous, distorted anchor that sinks—not into drums—but into empty space. The guitar only serves as sparks (or debris) that link the bass to the misty, ghostly, vocals. The song manages to capture the beauty and delicacy of the Cocteau Twins while gripping the razored edge of Nothing’s Guilty of Everything.

There is a Pacific North-Western heaviness and a Creation Records melancholy. Mass Gothic is without a doubt a band to keep an eye on.
