A review of the The i.l.y's song “Peace and Quiet.”

The i.l.y.’s, formed by members of experimental California hip hop group Death Grips, returns with the newest single off their forthcoming second album, Scum with Boundaries. “Peace and Quiet” is a playland of different sounds, featuring truly punk guitar riffs, aggressive drumming, and off-the-wall vocals. The song begins only with a minimal guitar riff, backed by electronic strings, hinting at the beginning of something frantic.

The vocals complement the building, nuanced instrumentation instead of overpowering. The coming chaos is foretold, but it is not clear how hard the band will bring it until mid-song. Between the mania, though, there lies a fun, almost whimsical energy that somehow manages to marry elements of punk rock with the indie rock sounds that prevailed around the early 2000s (think The Rentals, Teenage Fanclub).

“Peace and Quiet” weaves in different directions, introducing new textures at random points throughout. Towards the end, synth closes out the song on a dreamy note, while the consistent chorus keeps the song grounded in punkish flare. It’ll be exciting to see what The i.l.y.’s are up to next -- their unpredictable take on rock is intriguing and refreshing against contemporary music’s current, at-times humdrum, landscape.
