A review of the Porches release “Car.”

The newest single from New York synthpop outfit, Porches, arrives in time to supply us with just the right amount of summertime sadness. Aaron Maine's unwavering vocals against watery, '80s-reminiscent synth sounds, driving guitar, and steady drums paint the picture of youthful longing, feeling lost, and subsequent escape. It "takes us away from where we are," Maine drones on about the titular car; "oh, what a machine," he repeats with a sort of bored, jaded wonder. And just so, "Car" is anthemic in its quiet strength and simplicity.

Porches' (very) recent rise to indie fame includes collaborative stints with Urban Outfitters and tour shows opening for Alex G and Frankie Cosmos, respectively. The band's style can at times sound like an obvious ode to New Wave (think Psychedelic Furs, Echo and The Bunnymen), but Maine injects a tenderness that many of the bands from the '80s movement lacked. "Car", along with the rest of their newest batch of songs, manage to sound deeply personal while maintaining funky, atmospheric sounds that positively require dancing. Introspective Dance Music? Let's make that a thing.

Porches' newest album, Pool, released this past February, and they have a bunch of tour dates coming up this fall throughout the country. They are so much fun live, and you'll find yourself unable to resist shaking your hips along with Maine and the rest of the band.
