A review of the Heaven For Real album Kill Your Memory.

Emerging Canadian band Heaven for Real just released a new album of unique post-punk, jangle pop perfect for the last lap of summer. Kill Your Memory features the sweet yet frank lyrics and charming voices of singer-songwriters, Mark and Scott Grundy, against what their label describes as a "maximalist" pop sound. Comprised of hyper guitar riffs and bass, eclectic drumming, and add-ons like unexpected synth and complete changes in melody mid-song, the Heaven for Real brings their refreshing take on indie pop at a time when most of their contemporaries might seem to sway towards sparseness in sound.

Tracks like “Subliminal” and “Known Steps in Directions Unknown” feature instrumentals that are almost beachy; guitar riffs are happy and playful, while upbeat drums add to the funky atmosphere. The Grundy brothers' vocals help to ground the song with lyrics about feeling “scared to break through” and ultimately “dying on the beach” -- bringing deeper, existentialist ideas into an otherwise catchy, seemingly light pop song. This duality will set the band apart from in what often seems like an overly concentrated landscape of indie rock. Meanwhile, the titular “Kill Your Memory” starts with a minimal guitar riff, drum, vocal combination, the song eventually expands into a more complex, jangly, introspective muse on life, the past, and inevitably growing from all experience. “Kill Your Memory” also features an irresistible chorus. It would be a perfect addition to a road trip playlist.

Other notable tracks on Kill Your Memory include “Hotel #55,” “Smooth Ops,” and the closing song, “Misfire.” The guitar riffs ring out, the vocals and lyrics add a smart, tongue-in-cheek aspect, and the percussion simply elevates the atmosphere on each song. Mint Records has recently further improved their already solid roster by adding Heaven for Real, and I'm looking forward to more jangle-pop goodness from them in the future.
