A review of the Dinosaur Jr. album Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not.

The latest album from Dinosaur Jr. is the stuff of fuzzy, distorted, indie alt-rock dreams. This comes as no surprise. The Massachusetts-born band has influenced the direction of rock music since their formation in the mid-80s and have continued to contribute to the genre most notably in the 90s and early 2000s. Now, in 2016, "GIve a Glimpse of What Yer Not" adds to their impressive legacy with a slight update to their past efforts. However, the album still maintains that classic Dinosaur Jr. sound.

The album opens with "Goin Down", featuring driving riffs, power chords, and J Mascis' slow yet still commanding vocals. The lyrics stretch out perfectly over the hectic instrumentation. "Are you with me, are you with me when I'm gone?" drawls Mascis, the chorus egging on the energetic atmosphere. The second track, "Tiny," follows with a similar energy characteristic of Dinosaur Jr.'s past material, with Mascis' voice taking on a longing melody. The subsequent "Be a Part" temporarily slows everything down, hinting at more charming chaos as the album progresses.

Other significant tracks include "Love Is...", "I Walk for Miles", and "Mirror". These songs showcase the band's penchant for combining felt lyrics with catchy melodies and alternative flare. "Mirror" features a comparably more sparse atmosphere; Mascis' voice is able to be fully heard, and the lyrics ring out hauntingly. "Waste of time," he repeats, alongside emotional, fittingly noisy guitar.

All in all, the album presents an awesome circle-back to Dinosaur Jr.'s prime sounds; conversely, it can serve as a great introduction to those younger who aren't so familiar with the indie rock veterans. Dinosaur Jr. will be touring around the country throughout the upcoming months, and I'll probably try to catch them at their Irving Plaza show in November.
