A review of the Frank Ocean song “Ivy.”

R&B innovator Frank Ocean never stops reinventing his act and constantly defying the expectations of his fan base. His recent single, Ivy, blurs the lines between soul and experimental music. The song's instrumental is more of an ambient texture than of a beat, making for a truly unique approach.

The guitar melody that drives the song is buried underneath a massive wall of sound, build with ghostly synths and guitars: it almost sounds like the entire background song has been processed through a rotary speaker, giving it that distinctive "underwater tone". The ethereal spirit of the background music gives the lyrics a truly special feel, blurring the lines between freestyle singing and traditional song arrangements.

While Ocean utters the verses in a lower, more personal register, the choruses open up beautifully, showcasing the singer's dynamic range and truly distinctive approach to his vocals.

The experimental nature of this track largely reminds me of Kendrick Lamar's work on his acclaimed "To Pimp A Butterfly", which saw a distinctive rap / soul template flirting with many other genres and influences. Even in this case, the results are unique and surprisingly different from anything Ocean set out to accomplished in the past.
