A review of the The Dresden Dolls release “Live at Ford Amphitheater In Brooklyn.”

The Dresden Dolls is the brainchild of pianist / vocalist Amanda Palmer and drummer Brian Viglione.

The pair quickly managed to whip up a devoted following with their signature blend of punk rock ethics, gothic aesthetics and burlesque / cabaret theatricality. In addition to that, Palmer’s inspirational and irreverent lyrics added additional weight to a set of songs that became instant fan favorites.

Following a decade of hiatus, the duo reformed for a warm-up show in Boston, their hometown, and a larger show at the Ford Amphitheatre in Coney Island, Brooklyn.

The energy at the venue was incredible: the crowd consisted mostly of long-time fans that had been waiting years to see their favorite band, in many cases even for the first time.

Amanda Palmer’s distinctive singing and piano playing were absolutely on-point: her sudden screams, deep baritone whispers and atonal piano clusters were all there, bringing The Dresden Dolls’ soul back to life. If Amanda Palmer is the soul of the band, Brian Viglione is certainly its pulsating heartbeat. His drumming was tight and impeccable throughout the entire show, but even more surprisingly, he was an incredibly theatrical performer, bringing a visual identity to the songs with his mime-like poses and ironic demeanor. This gig was certainly a solid proof that The Dresden Dolls still retain massive appeal on their audience, as their music and act stood the test of time. Amongst the highlights of the show, it’s definitely worth noting the pair’s stellar rendition of Black Sabbath’s War Pigs, dedicated to Donald Trump for the occasion!
