A review of the Hoops release “EP.”

Hoops, one of the newest additions to Southern indie label Fat Possum Records, is yet another band out to keep shoegazey dream pop alive. Their unique spin on the subgenre, however, is palpable, if subtle. While their eponymous debut EP (following three self-released tapes) features the expected washed out guitars, dissonant chords, and reverb galore, there exists a clarity that grounds each song's atmosphere and a lightness that is decidedly summery.

The opening track, "Cool 2", features wobbly guitar, thumping percussion, and meek vocals. The recurring riffs suggest beachy psychedelia with a DIY roughness (think Mac DeMarco, Alex Calder). The subsequent track, "Yeah", is a watery, reverb-washed track that eases you in and prepares you for the fun that is the rest of this EP.

"Going Strong" might be my favorite track on the EP. Featuring a delectable melody and dancing drums, the song pulls you in. It is simply summer mood(-y) music at its finest. "Give it Time" and "Gemini" are solid closing tracks, pulling everything together in a mix of ethereal, pop-y goodness.

We’re able to hear vocalist and band founder Drew Auscherman's lyrics in most of the songs (this is still shoegaze, after all). They’re vague yet poignant, floating over each song's delicate musical landscape. To compare Hoops to similar bands such as Real Estate, Craft Spells, and DIIV would be accurate, and their sound may not come off as entirely fresh and new. However, the Indiana-based quartet seems to own their sound regardless, and unlike their aforementioned contemporaries, chooses to generally forgo the usual social media-inflamed routine of self-promotion. Managing to stay relatively mysterious, Hoops will leave you wanting more with this five-song teaser.
