A review of the The Head and the Heart song “Rhythm & Blues.”

Seattle Indie Folk band The Head and the Heart stay true to their genre while still managing to branch out and evolve in their own sound with their latest single, “Rhythm & Blues.” Featured on their newest album, Signs of Light; this track is a beautiful foray into the complexities of being in love alone.

“Rhythm & Blues” in the context of this gentle song is more of the conflicting feelings coming from being so enamored with someone who doesn't' feel the same, rather than the genre of the same name. Rhythm as in feeling so in love and in tune with someone, and blues as in how heartbroken you can be when that love isn't returned.

This track evokes that bittersweet emotion with a very complimentary, almost somber sound. I can see it being played in a car very strategically depending on who you're driving home.

Cause I've had the rhythm and blues

Since the day you met me

Stepped on my blue suede shoes

Watch Elvis go crazy

Come on, darling, won't you let me

Won't you let me turn you on

The reference to Elvis and his iconic song Blue Suede Shoes gave me the impression of quirkiness in an otherwise straight forward message. What stood out the most to me overall was the clean, driving bass line and the heartfelt vocal harmonies.

A statement on the band's website about Rhythm & Blues reveals that this song in particular is a different direction for the band, and something they feel is part of a larger evolution. "We could not be more proud to present another new song from Signs Of Light, “Rhythm & Blues.” This one really stood out to us during the writing in Stinson Beach, where we were able to explore new sounds and indulge each other's ideas. It's the latest step in our band's evolution and we're so excited for you to hear the whole album on September 9th."

“Rhythm & Blues” is a cool, sweet, relatable little tune that could easily capture the essence of a summer spent pining for someone special. A song that could help you remember what it was like to live with unrequited love and help you find closure, knowing that it was better to have loved.
