REVIEW: Dirty Projectors - “Keep Your Name”

It looks like Dirty Projectors have something new up their sleeve. Just two weeks ago the band released “Keep Your Name”—their first new song and music video in four years. Since Dirty Projectors released Swing Lo Magellan and About to Die in 2012, singer-songwriter Dave Longstreth has kept active in endeavors outside the indie world—composing classical material for ensemble and producing a record for Tuareg guitarist Bombino. But now it looks like he’s back with his band.

“Keep Your Name” is a poignant anti-ballad with near-robotic production. Using the language of divorce, “Keep Your Name” is undoubtedly a song of separation. While Longstreth croons, “What we imagined and what we became/We’ll keep them separate and you keep your name” during the verses, a sped-up and stretched-out sample of Dirty Projectors 2012 song “Impregnable Question” repeats “We don’t see eye to eye” during the chorus. Hollow, glitchy rhythms and an unexpected, frequency-shifting, plainspoken bridge eclipse the more traditional elements of a piano ballad.

If a new full-length album is on its way, “Keep Your Name” is an exciting hint at what is to come.
