A review of the Metallica song “Moth Into Flame.”

First of all I can't tell you how tickled I am to be reviewing Metallica. My Mother was obsessed with Enter Sandman when I was a little girl and have many fond memories growing up to that song in particular. As I grew I sorted myself into the "Old Metallica is Good Metallica" group and I recall the very day in which I made that decision - the day I got St.Anger on CD. It just wasn't what I was expecting, you know?

With that said, I always try to be as unbiased as possible and listened to Metallica's new track, Moth Into Flame, without pre-judgment. And honestly I felt that sinking St.Anger feeling again - the track is repetitive, generic, and leaves you searching for something more. It's Metallica all right, but without substance. When you hear something like Enter Sandman, or One, or any of Metallica's classics, they hit you and stay with you. Those tracks stood the test of time because each was unique and perfectly crafted. Moth Into Flame has no personality, it's just heavy.

I still love Metallica, don't get me wrong. But it seems they've veered off their track years ago and apparently follow a new format that I just don't get. I am happy for Metallica fans though, Metallica's upcoming album Hardwired…To Self-Destruct is the first full-length album from the core Metallica lineup since 2008’s Death Magnetic. Perhaps Moth Into Flame is simply an anthem to get fans riled up and ready for more, or perhaps it's a taste of what's to come.
