A review of the Descendents Live In New York.

As a kid growing in a small conservative town in Southern Italy, I never thought I’d have the chance to see the Descendents perform live. The legendary Californian band brought melody and lightness to the hardcore scene in the late 80s, which was becoming increasingly violent with thrash metal tendencies taking over. Descendents did not buy into any of that and kept playing fun and quirky songs with a childlike energy.

A few subway stops and I am in the middle of Time Square, probably the most bizarre place on Earth to see a punk rock show. I almost thought I was in the wrong place, but I spotted the marquee with a huge Descendents logo right in the middle of the chaos. Punk kids were lining up and the energy was good from the start.

Opening band Night Birds were a quarter from New Jersey whose music was a blend of garage and classic hardcore - Think The Stooges jamming with Black Flag. They had a great command of the stage and were able to engage the audience. The second band on the bill, Canadian stalwarts Fucked Up, were probably the highlight of the show to me. I knew very little about the band, but they managed to create a massive wall of sound and interact with the audience in a unique way - The Playstation Theatre suddenly became a small club and there was no divide between the band and the audience. I am definitely a new fan!

After some time waiting, Descendents took the stage and the moshpit went wild. I couldn’t think of a better opener than “Everything Sux” and the band dove into some of their classic material, along with some new songs from their recently release album, Hypercaffium Spazzinate. To me, Suburban Home was the perfect moment: the song has always been among my all-time favorite punk anthem and it really encapsulated the spirit of the night. It was ironic to hear those lyrics in the middle of Time Square, the most gentrified place on earth, but also extremely punk rock in its own right!
