  LCD Soundsystem LCD Sounsystem

I can see why everybody has been freaking out over LCD Soundsystem. I have to admit I hadn't heard more than two songs by them before getting this album, and now I am becoming a fan.

This album is an interesting mix of styles - they seem to wander off into disco territory, but you can forgive them for it. They seem to do it well. They also merge other styles really well, ranging from free-form electronic music to almost thrashy guitars with and indie rock feel. They're all over the map, but in a good way.

There are a total of 16 tracks in a 2 disc set. There's definitely some in between filler material, but even that's OK for filler. I always wonder what drives a band to release 2 CD's of OK stuff when they could boil it down to 1 CD of incredible material, but why complain? More music is always a good thing.

Anybody who has dealt with aging past their youth can dig the song Losing My Edge. It's a song of faded glory, losing your mojo. Or at least contemplating if you have aged past the point of being hip. The singer says he is losing his edge to better people, with better ideas, and more talent. It's self deprication at its best. He says he's heard that everybody you know is more relevant than everybody he knows. He says he was there when Captain Beefhart started up his first band and said to him "Don't do it that way - you'll never make a dime." He was the first guy to play Daft Punk to the rock kids at CBGB's. It's not negative, it's very tongue in cheek, like the ability to laugh at yourself.

LCD Soundsystem is the work of James Murphy, co-founder of New York's DFA Records and Mo Wax co-founder Tim Goldsworthy. Murphy has done production work for numerous artists, including The Rapture, and Les Savy Fav.

They're currently touring Europe and Asia as a five-piece band.

Overall, this is a very interesting mix of music that will appeal to indie rock purists, electroheads, and anyone who likes anything that goes outside of the mainstream.

RATING: *****  4 out of 5 stars
