  South by Southwest Music Festival

March 16-20, 2005

The South By Southwest Music Festival has released its complete list of names for the 2005 festival, and what a different music industry it is turning out to be. Once the domain of up and coming bands, the South by Southwest Music Festival is becoming a place where semi-established bands also play to get exposure in a more crowded, more conservative music industry.

What's interesting is the range of bands playing, from Billy Idol, Robyn Hitchcock, and Aimee Mann (as they try to reconnect to audiences) to Sleater-Kinney, LCD Soundsystem, and Wilco, who are all relatively well-known. And then of course there will always be the bands we have never heard of, some of which will break out in 2005.

There is a simultaneous SXSW Film Festival that coincides with the music festival. It's no Sundance yet, but it is an interesting indie venue, with over 170 films.

There is also an interactive component to cover the Web. Keynote speakers include Ana Marie Cox (from the political blog Wonkette.com ), and Malcolm Gladwell, Bram Cohen of BitTorrent, and Al Franken.
