Duophonic label joins the
downloading era on Bleep Indie label Duophonic has announced
that they are joining the downloading era by making
all of their Duophonic UHF Disks and Duophonic
Super 45s available for purchase at the Bleep
online music store. Bleep is the Web distribution
arm for Warp Records, who also distributes
for the Ninja Tune, Domino, and Rough
Trade labels. Duophonic is most widely
known for their Stereolab-Broadcast-Tortoise
representation, but they have almost two dozen bands
on their roster.
The move by Duophonic runs parallel to a larger
trend of how indie labels are moving to online distribution
as a way to counter the saturation of larger RIAA-based
record labels. The online movement lets the indies
get more exposure, and allows consumers more access
to their music.
Fear may be running abound
at major record lablels
The recent news about Sony BMG paying a $10
million settlement over payola issues may be just
the beginning of a larger trend. The investigation
into other groups is still going on, including EMI,
Warner, and Universal. Digital Music
News is reporting that "the mood inside the
majors is extremely stressed, with some top executives
fearing dismissals and even criminal charges."
The theory is that Sony BMG recieved an easy
settlement, while other's may be made an example of.
DMN went on to say that a label insider told
them that some serious take downs are in order. "The
label falls back on its clear anti-payola rules, and
throws its top guys under the bus. And it's more than
people getting the ax, this could be criminal."
