The South by Southwest Music Festival
has begun to announce the line up for
its 2006 show, due to take place in March
in Austin, Texas. There have been over
800 names announced with more promised
as they are confirmed. SXSW is one of
the biggest festival/conference outings
in the U.S., and they are backing that
with a line up that matches the name with
quality.
SXSW is continuing on its path to integrate
some very well known names in its festival,
without making it an over the top mainstream
affair. Names so far include , Echo
& The Bunnymen, Mogwai,
Of Montreal, Beth Orton,
Arab Strap, Robert Pollard,
Portastatic, Animal Collective,
and Belle & Sebastian.
There's also a heady mix of bands set
to break in 2006, like Celebration,
Metric, The Plastic Constellations,
Rocky Votolato, and Wolf And
Cub.
SXSW has the luxury of not only
being one of the first festival / conference
deals of the year but also one of the
biggest. This is the gathering that shapes
the rest of the year... check out anyone
who will be somebody in 2006 at SXSW.
It's a week of shows, discussion panels,
schmoozing, new bands, schmoozing, drunkeness
while trying to schmooze, etc.
The keynote speaker will be Neil Young,
who'll be sharing the stage with Jonathan
Demme, who directed a film on Neil
Young titled Heart of Gold.
And lo and behold, that very film is playing
at the SXSW Film Festival. These SXSW
guys are good. Other speakers include
Judy Collins, Kris Kristofferson, and
Billy Bragg.
