The Impossible Shapes:
Tum

Written by: Corey Tate

The Impossible Shapes are purveyors of a country-folk (I find myself typing those words so often lately) hoedown of ecclecticism. This is what happens when you mix rural roots with modern urban context - you get an oscillating pendulum of music washed in psychic, earthy awareness and experimentalism.

This really comes out in songs like Pixie Pride and the short but powerful Tahuti, Splendid Scribe as the folk leanings merge with more experimental sounds; a distortion-tinged guitar washed with wah-wah effects is laid over a folk core of music. The end result is music that's distinctly its own, and makes The Impossible Shapes stand out.

The other interesting thing here is they way the bounce back and forth from a tape splicing aesthetic to the folk thing. They never spend too much time in any one arena, but rather run back and forth from room to room, always keeping you guessing. And they're not completely scattered about it either, there's an overall scheme/aesthetic/method to what they do on Tum. It's like a loose focus with attention deficit disorder.

The Impossible Shapes have been tapping into the collective unconsciousness for a bite of that big psychic spiral of life, and they've channeled it for us all here. They're the mediums of the wayward passage, the messengers of the new pagan truth.

RATING: ***** 4.5 out of 5 stars
