Wolf Parade isn't breaking up. Spencer Krug seems perfectly content with the day job, but sometimes the day job just isn't enough for a creative person, you know? Sometimes you need to keep the money maker while exercising your more creative bents on funkier projects. Enter Sunset Rubdown, the rubdown Spencer gets around sundown when he comes home from a long day at the Wolf Parade office.
And he's definitely jumping out of creative corners here. Spencer's enlisted Jordan Robson Cramer, Mike Doerksen, and Camilla Wynn Ingr to go along for the ride with him. They're creating all sorts of music that goes all over the musical map.
The album starts out with the bombastic Stadiums and Shrines II, and it's all pianos and guitars and catharsis, working you over until no part of you is left unaltered. Then you jump into They Took a Vote and Said No, which almost starts out like a German drinking song. More intensity and frenzy. From there, the album scales up and down from quiet songs to loud songs to fast songs to slow songs. It's definitely got the Spencer Krug stamp on it, and you'll be able to hear the influence he has on Wolf Parade after listening to Shut Up I Am Dreaming.
This is a great album for challenging your ears to listen to something cool and offbeat. It's experimental. It's lo-fi and big and bombastic at the same time. I can see now why they used the promo photo of sunset on a cruise ship with brontosauruses swimming in the background... that's exactly the kind of atmosphere this music evokes. If Spencer Krug were actually sitting in that scene this is the kind of music that would provide that soundtrack.
