Deerhoof Posts Free EP for Download, Bassist Chris Cohen Quits to Pursue the Curtains

By: Spacelab Research Staff
And it's not clear what order these events happened in, either. Deerhoof has posted a new free album for download - it's a free continuous MP3 of live songs & covers, including songs by My Bloody Valentine, The Beatles, and Canned Heat. It's available now through the Kill Rock Stars web site (see link below).

At the same time, bassist Chris Cohen has made an announcement via the bands MySpace page that he will depart from Deerhoof to pursue his other band, The Curtains. He made the following post at the band's MySpace page.

"How do I say this? For me, it's big news - I'm not going to be in Deerhoof anymore. As hard a decision as it was - I loved being in Deerhoof! - I really want to go full-time with my other band, The Curtains." It was his first band, after all.

So The Curtains are finishing their new album, Calamity, and it will be out on Asthmatic Kitty Records in the Fall. It's being decribed as a "pop" record, with Chris singing and playing all of the instruments during time in isolation at a mountain cabin. Idle time is the devil's workshop people... or is it hands? Anyway, Chris's hands must be very clean. He sent a rough demo to Michael Kauffman, and the Asthmatic Kitty deal fell into place.

Deerhoof will continue to play upcoming tour dates with the Flaming Lips & Radiohead, as well as festival dates for Spain's Primavera and Seattle's Bumbershoot Festival. No word on whether the departing Chris will be included in these dates, or who his replacement will be.
