Grizzly Bear : Sorry For The Delay

Written by: Corey Tate

That's OK, don't apologize. It was worth the wait. On Grizzly Bear's rereleased EP, Sorry For The Delay, we're given an ephermeal set of spacey tracks that aren't really here while you're playing them. They're sort of displaced, like musical wallpaper that you put on repeat to let the songs play over and over again. Your ear will come back time and time again as the songs rise and fall. They're not really meant for active listening, they're atmospheric and ambient.

I've heard that composer Erik Satie once scolded an audience for directly listening to his music when he performed at an art exhibition. He felt that the music was more environmental, meant to be a part of the atmosphere you were swimming around in, rather that something directly engaging. This music is a little bit like that.

On the album's title track (and starting song), we get slow moving melodies, with a casual drum beat that almost isn't even being played. It's a bit like trying to run through a pool of molasses. The vocals sound lo-fi, like they're on AM radio. The overall effect is interesting... You get a disconnected vibe.

On Sure Thing, the band follows through with more intentional slowness. This album is definitely a chill out album for kicking back on the slow tip. There's almost a sense of creating slow anthems here - you'll find yourself humming the chorus to the song later in the day and wondering where the music came from. Wallpaper!

There's even a great cover of Owner of a Lonely Heart from Yes. I didn't look at the track list before playing the album the first couple times and kept thinking that I knew this song. It didn't even dawn on me that this was a Yes cover until I looked at the cover and saw the song title. You'll recognize it when you hear it. It's a great way to do a cover - totally true to the Yes version but sounds completely like Grizzly Bear.

So listen to this for an ambient wind-down. Trouble sleeping? Take two songs from the Grizzly Bear EP and call me in the morning.

RATING: ***** 4.3 out of 5 stars
