Comets On Fire Get Earthy On New Album Avatar

By: Spacelab Research Staff
Sub Pop band Comets on Fire are scheduled to release their new album Avatar in August. There's an almost black hole (bad metaphor, I know) around the album, save for a very baiting and mysterious comment from Sub Pop Records, in which they say "... Surprising, then, that they should turn in an earthy, more accessible and downright beautiful album as their follow-up (to 2004's Blue Cathedral)." Is this the start of a kindler, gentler Comets On Fire?

The boys have been hanging out at Prarie Sun Studios in Cotati, California, to record the new music, and have turned to influences like the Allman Brothers, Quicksilver, Procol Harem, and "some insane Fela/Sun Ra/Crazy Horse hybrid" for inspiration on their new material.

Sub Pop is describing the sound as cleaner and clearer, while maintaining the band's original sense of experimentalism and tribalism. Dig the unnoficial track list:

01 Dogwood Rust
02 Jaybird
03 Lucifer's Memory
04 The Swallow's Eye

06 Sour Smoke
