Mercury Music Prize Announces Shortlist for 2006 Prize
By: Spacelab Research Staff
The UK's version of the
best new music prize of the year, aka the Mercury Music Prize, has cut their list of nominations down to the shortlist. They finalists were announced today at the Royal Commonwealth Club by Jools Holland, former Squeeze frontman and current host of the BBC's Later with Jools Holland.
And the names that made that cut are sparking a lot of talk over who didn't make it that should have, who's on there who shouldn't be, and who'll win. You gotta love the fiesty Brits... always there to weigh in with an opinion.
So the list includes the names you might expect: Thom Yorke, Arctic Monkeys, Muse, but some you might not, like Scritti Politti (?). Then there's the middle ground of good talent, like Hot Chip, Richard Hawley, Lou Rhodes, and Editors.
And everybody seems to be freaking out about why Kate Bush is not on the list.
The winner will be announced on September 5 at the awards show. They'll also collect £20,000 ($36,000).
