The Decemberists and The Crane Wife: A Story Coming To You In October
By: Spacelab Research Staff The Decemberists will release their new album The Crane Wife on October 3rd via Capitol Records. At just over an hour long, it's the result of a wise choice by the band to not to release a double album -- they apparently had 22 songs in rotation, but decided to make the album a 10 song release.
"The last thing we want is a double album. 85 to 90 percent of double records smack of self-indulgence and we just didn't want to hand that to [Capitol]. But it's not like the songs we're cutting are throwaways. We're kinda attached to all the songs we make," said Colin Meloy in a recent Billboard interview.
He went on to say that the album is actually a story about a man who finds a crane and sets it free, only to have a woman show up on his doorstep a few days later. They fall in love and get married, and she begins weaving a cloth to sell and asks him not to look in the room where she's making it. He eventually gives in to his curiosity and looks in the room to find out that the woman is actually the crane, and she's weaving the cloth out her feathers. There you go... I've ruined the whole thing for you. But if the story sounds familiar, it's because it's based on a Japanese folk tale.
