Written by: Alex Hegazy Having had their Hard-Fialike single Suzie showcased on one of the UK's premier independent labels Fierce Panda, Boy Kill Boy have been ear marked for success from the start. After Suzie, they were soon discovered by a major label and snapped up to release their long playing offering Civilian.
The album ranges from punchy Britpop rock alongs like opener Back Again, or the “get up” of Six Minutes to synthpop stadium songs Killer and Friday Friday, speckled with ballads like Ivy Parker or album closer Shoot Me Down.
It’s easy to make a comparison with this band and The Killers. Except this band are the real deal – they sing with a British accent but are actually from Britain and not Las Vegas. In fact they are from the same East London ‘hood as Hard-Fi. They also happen to have an in vogue synthpop element that ensures them some serious dancefloor attention.
However, at times Boy Kill Boy's sound is slightly darker and grittier than their contemporaries and it’s no surprise to find out that the producer John Cornfield for this album has also worked with Muse, Oasis and Supergrass. This combined with their stomping songs, sets Boy Kill Boy up with a chance to join Britpop’s top ranks. If they don’t, then it will surely be a near miss.
