After many years and a few different bands, the married couple / band of The Like Young have decided to reign in the camp and give it a rest. Citing frustration, anxiety, and a need to move on, lead singer Joe Ziemba said posted a message to the band's MySpace page announcing the band's farewell.
They're going out on a tour, that now becomes their farewell tour, on the west coast before finishing with shows in Texas with The Long Winters and Ted Leo and the Pharmacists.
Here's what Joe had to say:
"The release of Last Secrets culminated 15 years of songwriting, recording, touring, and releasing records. With our most fulfilling album behind us, Amanda and I are very happy to announce the band's retirement.
There's no big drama, no inner turmoil. The fact is, you can only take so much frustration and heartbreak before a once great love becomes something unpleasant and sad. The passion to create music is not what it once was for us. We're no longer interested in being a part of an industry which, with a few exceptions, is often cold, cynical and senseless. The financial, mental, and physical strains are constant. The resulting victories are few. We need to make smart decisions at this point in our lives. Rather than continuing to struggle, we've decided to cut it off forever and move on. The relief (and release) that we both feel after reaching this decision is nearly impossible to convey in words.
Over the last ten years (and three bands), we've built up a small and very earnest fanbase. We've also had the opportunity to work with two truly wonderful record labels in Parasol and Polyvinyl. We've loved working with them. They do it how it should be done.
For these things, we'll be forever grateful. Thank you.
The upcoming West coast tour dates are the last shows The Like Young will ever play. We'll be celebrating every single night. As for the future, our site (and Myspace & Flickr) will continue to be updated with anything of relevance.
I spent my twenties racked with anxiety and uncertainty, most of which was a result of some aspect of playing in bands. I'm going to be 30 next year. It's time to live a little."
