Final Fantasy Wins Canada's Polaris Music Prize

By: Spacelab Research Staff
Canada, who continually walks down the path of being a global music force of their own, has announced the winner for the first ever Polaris Music Prize. It's their own version of the New Pantheon (US) or Australian Music Prize, Canada-style. Polaris is quick to point out that the prize is based 'solely on artistic merit, without regard to genre or record sales,' so maybe a better name is the anti-Grammy!

And this year's winner is Final Fantasy, the project of Owen Pallet (Arcade Fire). It was for the album He Poos Clouds, which he doesn't, unless it's on the album, and then only musically. Owen's project beat out big Canadian names like Broken Social Scene, Metric, Wolf Parade, and The New Pornographers, all global names in their own right. Canada ain't messin' around. Owen will get $20,000 and well, you know, the prize.

The seed for the award was planted five years ago, when organizer and Executive Director Steve Jordan realized that Canada had an emerging presence on the global music scene, and could create an award of it's own.

"It started about 2001 when I first got the brainstorm that there should be something that should happen in Canada. It was around the time that the Constantines, Weakerthans, Sarah Harmer, Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Propagandhi and all of these bands that had amazing records that were at the forefront of the Can-rock renaissance. There didn't seem to be an all-encompassing forum to trumpet these amazing records," he said recently while speaking with ChartAttack.

The finalists were selected from a panel of 120 Canadian judges, and in order to keep the winner secret, a final review panel of judges made the final decision on the winner on September 11th. The award was presented on September 18th at Toronto's Phoenix Theatre.
