PJ Harvey Says Peel This, John Peel Day Takes Shape
By: Spacelab Research Staff Polly Jean Harvey has decided to mark the day of John Peel's death with a release of her own Peel Sessions. She's taken a list of 12 tracks, recorded from 1991-2004, and packaged them up for relase on October 23rd. It will be aptly titled PJ Harvey - The Peel Sessions 1991-2004 and will be released on Island Records.
She joins other acts commemorating the second anniversary of his death, including Siouxsie and the Banshees and Pulp, who will also release their own set of Peel Sessions during October. There's even a compilation titled John Peel—Right Time, Wrong Speed: 1977-1987, that features some of John Peel's favorite tracks, including bands like the Buzzcocks, the Damned, Killing Joke, and Echo and the Bunnymen.
The first time I had ever heard of John Peel was from one his famous Peel Sessions. I was in this indie record store and picked up a CD from the Cure called the Peel Sessions.
I took it home and listened to it. It had these incredible versions of great Cure songs, like Killing an Arab and 10:15 Saturday Night. I noticed how the songs had this energy to them. They sounded better than normal studio sessions, where every track gets laid down at a different time. It sounded like the band was all playing AT THE SAME TIME. Novel concept. I later found out that the Peel Sessions were from bands that had played live in the studio on John Peel's radio show on BBC.
Radio 1 will also be hosting Peel Night, the second incarnation of of festivities at Camden Electric Ballroom in London. They're not releasing a line up until closer to the actual day of show, causing fan hysteria and message board speculation on who's going to be there. Until then, dig the PJ Harvey track list:
