SIGNED: 4AD Signs Beirut

Beirut has signed to the U.K. label 4AD to release the album Gulag Orkestar. Beirut is the work of Zach Condon, who's not from Lebanon, used to be from Albequerque New Mexico, and now lives in the music city know as Brooklyn.

4AD says "Condon was a straight-A student until he dropped out of high school at the age of 16 to travel Europe in a drunken haze, cavorting and partying with the locals wherever he ended up."

It was there that Zach was first exposed to Boban Markovic Orchestra, which gave him the influence he worked into Gulag Orkestar. Joined by Jeremy Barnes and Heather Trost, he recorded the album at Sea Side Studios in Park Slope. 4AD describes the sound as "Neutral Milk Hotel from behind The Iron Curtain." and will release an expanded version of the album in the U.S. October.
