SIGNED: Hauschka Signs To FatCat Records Imprint 130701

An experimentalist to the core, Volker Bertelmann, known better as Hauschka, has signed to the 130701 imprint of the U.K.'s FatCat Records. Seeing the playing of the piano as just too undemanding, Volker deconstructs the sonic quality of his music by changing the piano, i.e. modifying to his liking. He calls it the prepared piano.
FatCat Records describes his process this way, "Clamping wedges of leather, felt or rubber between the strings; preparing the hammers with aluminium paper or rough films; placing crown corks on the strings, weaving guitar strings around the piano's guts, or pasting them down with gaffa tape."
Volker Bertelmann works in the spirit of John Cage or Henry Cowell to deconstruct the music on a wholistic level in order to create something entirely new sounding. His album for FatCat has already been recorded and is due out in 2007.
