Plug Independent Music Awards Open Voting For 2007

By: Spacelab Research Staff
Now you too can be a part the awards experience known as the PLUG Awards, the People's Choice Award of the indie and underground world. You can go to plugawards.com, and vote for nominees in categories like best music best label, best website (hmmm... you're at one right now, vote for Spacelab!), as well as other media like best DVD, store, print media, and so on.

The final list of nominees get voted on by the secret Plug Cartel, who might share headquarters and handshakes with popular other undergrounds like Skull and Bones. OK, not that secret, their culled from people who embody the spirit of independent music. The Cartel, or PLUG Advisory Board as they're officially known, will vote on the final winners.

The awards show happens on February 10, 2007 at Irving Plaza in New York. PLUG organizers have partnered with NYC collective Pool Parties to make this year's show a really big thing.

Last year's show proclaimed Sufjan Stevens the biggest winner (3 awards), Bright Eyes close to that (2 awards), and Animal Collective, Sleater-Kinney, Bloc Party showed they're not a bunch of slouches with awards for the best album the year in their own respective genres.

The Plug Awards seeks to create an awards show that escapes all of the evils of other awards shows that focus on sales, media saturation, etc (i.e. buying influence) to reward novel concepts like artistic integrity, and umm, good music. Sound like a foreign concept? It shouldn't, and that's why the Plug Awards are trying to create a venue that isn't so industry-centric.

There's also the events going down in Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Detroit, Brooklyn, and Portland with music in the run up to the show.
