Lizard King Launches, The Pierces Go On Tour with Albert Hammond Jr.
By: Susan Frances
The sultry sister duo of The Pierces, comprised of Allison and Catherine Pierce, will be releasing their second album Thirteen Tales Of Love And Revenge in February 2007 on Lizard King Records. It was produced by Roger Grenawalt (Ben Kweller, Adam Green). The label is headed by A&R hit maker Martin Heath, who signed The Killers back in 2004. Thirteen Tales Of Love and Revenge has been two years in the making, proceeding The Pierces debut release Light Of The Moon in January 2005.
Their MySpace page states that when they were asked what they wanted their album to sound like by their producer, they said “like a fever induced, gypsy dream that you have after drinking too much red wine while listening to a cabaret singer in a southern speakeasy that is run by witches.”
They got what they wished for. On their latest release, the Alabama-born/New York City-based Pierces have taken gypsy-like dance rhythms and entangled them with intoxicating acoustic guitars and fancy-free synth effects that glamorize their glistening vocal inflections. The Pierces new release has been compared to Regina Spektor and The Wreckers Michelle Branch and Jessica Harp.
The Pierces are slated to open for Albert Hammond, Jr., whose recent split from supporting The Strokes has taken the acoustic rock foursome on their own headlining tour. When The Pierces were invited to join Albert Hammond, Jr.’s tour, they used their network of friends in New York to assemble a live band that includes Russell Simins of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Shannon Ferguson of Longwave, Sammy James Jr. of Mooney Suzuki, and Ben Bromley of Fischerspooner.
Lizard King Records is aspiring for another smash hit with The Pierces as they had with The Killers. The London/New York based label formed in the UK in 2002, started a branch in New York City in 2005, and signed an agreement with Warner Music Group in June 2006 to use WMG’s marketing and sales and distribution networks for their artists. Other artists on Lizard King Records US (www.myspace.com/lizardkingrecords) roster include Drive By Argument, Santogold, Surefire, and Greater Good.
