Right now, if you put your ear to the ground, you can hear it. It's the sound of the media onslaught of the Shins. They're releasing their new album Wincing The Night Away on January 23 via Sub Pop, and they've just announced tour dates.
Not a lot of them mind you, but Sub Pop has assured Spacelab that this only the first leg of what promises to be more shows in the US and Europe. There's no confirmed opening act(s) yet, but teams and teams of Shins people might actually be working on that right now. Eric Johnson of the Fruit Bats will help round out the touring band (the Shins unofficial fifth Beatle).
The band is working hard to co-manage family life and the band, and seem to be doing it well for right now... singer James Mercer is a new father. "Our booking agent wants us to continue touring forever. I've found it a challenge to focus on the big picture," he said in an interview with Billboard.
Marty Crandall went on to say "If we keep doing it the way we've been doing it, we can live this way. I hope this might be the record that allows us to become our own enterprise and call our own shots. We've got the friendship and the experience behind us -- it'll be challenging, but it's something I know we can do."
The band wil also play Saturday Night Live on January 13th, with the promise of the songs Phantom Limb and New Slang. When asked if the band will appear in any SNL skits, a Sub Pop representative said "Not that I’m aware of." They'll also play David Letterman on the 23rd of January.
