Giving him very little time to breathe, Jim Fairchild’s band All Smiles is busy touring this summer. He moved so fast after Grandaddy’s breakup to his solo career that they all but overlapped. He’s been touring since signing with Dangerbird Records in February to release his debut solo record Ten Readings of a Warning. He’ll meet up with labelmate Sea Wolf in Chicago on May 19th before joining with Menomena on June 6th in Eugene, Oregon. In fact, Danny Seim of Menomena is one of the band members on Fairchild’s new album, so these shows could have lots of crossover.
Ten Readings of a Warning features more than just Danny Seim... members from Modest Mouse, Great Northern, The Blackheart Procession and Quasi and the Jicks all make appearances. Emotion ties everything together in these All Smiles tracks, which is something Fairchild was unable to do as the guitarist of Grandaddy. He pours his heart out successfully, taking the frontline both vocally and with strings down on the piano keys instead of on his strings.
Dangerbird Records says Jim Fairchild’s music is a “sunny slice of indie pop,” but Fairchild has said he’d like to avoid any definition and that variation is the key. It’s good to know things with going solo have a sunny outlook since the politics of being in a band didn’t sit well with Fairchild. Maybe that’s why he’s All Smiles.
